Crooked Accounts / Follow the Money

Guiomar Cabral was overjoyed to receive your report. However, the reward thrust upon you by the Vice Admiral was…different than you expected. After using the information you supplied to avoid the trap laid for him by Slag, Cabral managed to destroy no small number of Slag’s forces. Sadly, the Grim Drudgeon proved a true dreadnought of a ship, and Slag escaped leaving the wreckage of no few Portuguese vessels in his wake.

Helm of the Gorgon

During the battle, you enjoyed the luxury of a seaside manor house, where you were to wait until the resolution to be paid. When Cabral arrived, he declared the bad news. “That devious slayer has again evaded justice! How long shall his blood-spilling go unpunished? Whatever I must do to lay hands on him, that will I do!”

Then, to your surprise, he offered you a job.

Firedrake Helm

“It seems plain to me that Slag has infiltrated my staff. He must have been forewarned to have pulled off his escape so well. And I have noticed some discrepancies in my logbooks. I need someone to investigate the matter, and I can’t trust any of my own. So I’m appointing you.”

This wasn’t the kind of compensation you were looking for. You tried to explain this to Cabral, but he forestalled you and insisted that you help him sniff out the traitor.

“You may not think it, but you are the right type of person for this job. You will need to commit all manner of crime as you investigate, for we have no time for niceties. Storm the prisons to uncover whatever scraps of information you can. You may even have to mug some people on the streets. Once we know who Slag’s been paying, we can follow the money trail to our infiltrator. And don’t worry. I will make it worth your while!”

He shows you helms of power, chests of jewels, and other precious things. Who are you to turn down loot? And it’s not like you haven’t done this kind of work before.  You’ll just have to knock a few heads and learn the identity of the traitor. Of course, once you do locate him, who’s to say he won’t be willing to pay you even more to keep your mouth shut?

Naval Bulwark / Maritime Barricade

captain's quarters

Candle light flickers on the table as you crouch in the shadows, hidden behind a handful of storage crates. You are in the oversized Captain’s Quarters of Grim Drudgeon, Slag’s personal ship, where he and all of his captains are seated around a massive table. You had heard about this private meeting several days ago, and you found a way to provide yourself an entrance through a back window. You’ve been sitting here in the dark for hours, waiting for the guests to arrive. Pleasantries have drawn to a close and now the meeting is finally under way.

Slag stands up, his tremendous form looming over the others. A wild black beard juts from his face, and his dark overcoat hangs nearly to the floor. Sheathed weapons hang from his weapons belt and baldric over a dark grey tunic and charcoal breeches. He removes his leather tricorn hat, leaving his completely bald head gleaming in the candle light.

st vincent islandSlag’s voice is a rumble with a deadly edge to it. He says, “You all know what we’re up against. The Johns have gone too far. Their interference ends here. Corvis. I need you to scuttle your ship in front of St. Vincent harbor. The Johns will have to work hard to find a landing, and while they do we’ll riddle their ships with holes from our cannons mounted on the cliffs. Geraldine. You need to hold the line and prevent any ships from leaving once they’re in our trap. Maltos. You and Slendercane will lead the thrust against the main body of ships once the trap has sprung.”

Slag continues to give orders, with occasional remarks from the other captains. Then he concludes. “I know I don’t need to remind you what will happen if the Ivory Order fails to stop the Johns. If they secure a foothold, there’ll be no stopping them. Besides, I’m the bait for this trap, and if it goes awry, ye’ll all have hell to pay!”

Copperplate – Capt. Slendercane’s Ship

He glares down at everyone at the table. “’Cause make no mistake, I don’t intend to be taken alive! Or dead, for that matter…my meetin’ with the devil won’t come so soon!”

You’re not sure who the Johns are, but you know that the Ivory Order is what Slag and his inner circle call themselves. Apparently Vice Admiral Cabral is part of these Johns. In any case, he’s the one you must find. The information you hold’s as good as gold…a whole heapin’ pile of it! Which is what you’re owed for your crafty spywork.

The trick will be getting to Cabral in one piece! But what worked once may work a second time…Perhaps if you let Cabral’s forces capture your ships, you can gain a quick audience with him. The trick is to not give away your hand too soon, lest Slag’s forces eliminate you. Slipping out the back window, you find your men and begin relaying the information. With trusty sea hands in key locations on numerous ships, you may just be able to pull it off! So go head-to-head in naval attacks and let your ships be overrun! The more vessels you lose, the better your odds of getting the message to Guiomar Cabral!

Batten Down the Hatches/Braving the Storm

It’s been weeks since you were forced to yield to the vile murderer who captured your vessel. You still know little about the man who ordered the attack, though his followers refer to him simply as Slag. You have been absorbed into the crew of a massive battleship called Copperplate. Most of the other crew seem to have joined Slag’s forces under similar circumstances. Everyone is in fearful awe of the dark murderer. Captain Slendercane of your vessel seems to melt whenever Slag comes on board. Just a week ago Slendercane had been First Mate, but was promoted when the former captain refused to attack a vessel carrying a Catholic Cardinal. The remains of the former captain are still bound high on the main mast, where Slag had him nailed after his tongue was removed.  It was an unpleasant couple of days waiting for the man to die.

Now it seems a tremendous battle on the open seas is about to take place, and during a storm, no less! But no one would dare to disobey an order from Slag. Captain Slendercane finishes reading a message received by pigeon and begins ordering everyone to prepare to brave the storm. You’ll have to keep close to yer mates…best to have someone at yer back you can trust!

Throwing the Fight / Striking Colors

Jolly RogerYou’re under attack! Drums beat loudly and a shrill whistle sounds, rousing you from yer slumber. A voice is heard from above deck: “All hands to the ready! Jolly Roger sighted!” Out of nowhere, a squadron of ships has surrounded you in the night and is closing in! Not one to travel without backup, you scan the darkness and see one of your traveling companions trying to flee as the vessel burns. Bright lanterns in the mastheads of the enemy ships illuminate the skull and crossbones, indicating that any attempt to fight will result in no quarter.

Quart Doorknob

You fear that the mastermind behind this assault may be the murderer being hunted by Vice Admiral Guiomar Cabral. ‘Tis a shame that he’s not around when he’d be of use! Suddenly, sounds of commotion announce some unwelcome visitors at the starboard bow. A group of pirates have boarded your ship and are disarming your men! You see a flash of light as it reflects from a strange Quartz Doorknob hanging at the belt of an assailant. Then another gleams in your direction. You wonder what sort of devilry is at work here, for such an odd fashion choice to rear its head on the open seas.

It’s time to decide whether to strike colors or resist the blackguard! You know the reputation of this villain, and he’s no one to be trifled with. Might you profit by bowing your head to the rapscallion for a time? Perhaps if you throw the fight, ye’ll be able to survive and carry information to Cabral later…information that he will pay for dearly!

Long Arm of the Law / Jurisdiction

dungeonSomething strange is happening on the open seas. Pirate ships are disappearing, and apparently other vessels are, as well. There are rumors of an evil force moving upon the waters, destroying everything in its path. Naval enforcers from Europe and the colonies have sent forth their best officers to deal with the situation. Foremost among them is a Portuguese Vice Admiral named Guiomar Cabral, who has been given broad jurisdiction over the matter. Guiomar is not a superstitious man, and he believes a violent fiend who is very human has been perpetrating these terrible deeds. He is raiding ships and ports everywhere, rounding up anyone he feels may be associated with the unknown murderer.

It is not a good time to be free. Get yourself in jail and stay there! The longer you can evade the attention of Cabral and his men, the better. Guiomar Cabral doesn’t care about common criminals…he’s on a more serious manhunt. After he’s moved on, you can return to business as usual.

A New Generation & The Life of a Freebooter

ship at island falls2Years of peace and prosperity have passed since the fall of the Mad Sea God. The seas have been unusually safe, with fewer casualties to storms than in the past. Fresh, clean water has been found in abundance on many islands, leading to greater prosperity for the pirates who occupy them. In fact, some have even taken to cultivating vegetables!

Meanwhile, life among civilized people has become even more difficult. The rich are getting richer, and exploiting the less affluent even more than before. Nobles have become petty, wasting the lives of their peasants in meaningless squabbles. And crime in the big cities has risen to an all-new high.  The trading companies have made a special nuisance of themselves, profiting on the misfortunes of others and evading justice.

Because of these things, life as a freebooter has taken on a greater appeal than ever before. Numerous men and women have taken to the seas, eager to throw in with a crew of buccaneers that suits them. But not just anyone can make it as a pirate! If you plan on surviving out here, you’ll need to build your skill and physique to withstand the elements AND the wily cutthroats who’ll share your meals!

Old Ironbeard’s Revenge

-Old Ironbeard, The Legendary Pirate King

A cold wind blows in the night as the pirates sail toward an uncertain fate. Golden Eye is in the crow’s nest, watching for trouble. He spots a line of vessels, and far behind it a cliff that matches the description of the Fortress of Inciendas. He cries out, “Enemy ships, dead ahead! Fortress in sight!”

Cannons are adjusted as the dark smudges in the night resolve as enemy vessels. A splash is heard nearby, followed by a “whoosh!” The enemy has lost no time in trying to sink the approaching ships! lightchest says, “Steady! Wait until we’re in a reasonable range…” After a sound of splintering wood erupts from a cannon shot nearby, he snarls and yells, “FIRE!”

Explosions resound in rapid succession as cannon balls are sent hurtling toward Inciendas’s fleet. Cpt Henna says, “Syraxx! Silent Assassin! Let’s head under the shadow of the cliffs. If it’s deep enough, we may be able to sneak past their line and flank them.”

The vessels on both sides jockey for position as they seek the upper hand. Cannons are fired, followed by muskets as the gap narrows. Small iron balls graze D233’s scalp and he throws himself to the deck. D shouts to the helmsman, “Watch it! I don’t want to spend the rest of my life with grapeshot-patterned baldness!” Red Beard says, “I fear no volley! Ram the nearest vessel!” The Pope follows alongside as the two target enemy ships.

-Sirena Chilota, the beautiful mermaid daughter of the Mad Sea God

Then an orange light appears from high on the cliff ahead. It arcs up into the sky, then plummets toward the sea. Flames can be seen as it seems to grow in size, then the massive fireball collides into Red Beard’s ship, followed by explosions from gun powder, pitch, and other flammables. The Pope’s vessel is rapidly engulfed, as well, and the fire lights up the night as screams come from the crew, flinging themselves into the water.

The Pope makes his way to a long boat, and shouts, “Thou shalt rue the day thou didst make me thine adversary, Inciendas!”

Then Anonymous comes shooting past on a light clipper. He asks, “Ready to heat things up, Professor?”

Professor Kyo looks over with a serious expression and gives a curt nod. Then he releases the Greek Fire. As Anonymous steers the ship, dodging between the other vessels and flying ammunition, liquid flame causes passing ships to blossom with radiant heat. Bubbles stares agape in horrified fascination as three enemy combatants on fire leap into the water, only to find that there is no relief to be had there. He says, “Damn! That’s horrible!” Groany steps beside him and says, “Yeah. I’m glad I’m not on the receiving end of that. Why don’t we go give them ‘mercy’?” The two proceed to target burning swimmers, taking them out with their pistols. They find two men on fire climbing Kyosji Fisher’s boat, and blast them before they set it aflame.

Laurelia Cariño, Old Ironbeard’s lover

Another massive fireball is hurled down from the north cliffs, narrowly missing Anonymous’s clipper and hitting an enemy ship. Professor Kyo looks toward the cliff top, saying, “Inciendas. Your assistance is appreciated.” Anonymous smiles and waves up at the now-visible figure on the cliff. He shouts, “Feel free to take out more! I won’t complain, as long as you stick to destroying your own ships!”

Suddenly, a gap closes and the clipper crashes into two other ships. Kyosji Fisher leaps from one ship to another just before an explosion. lightchest helps him up, and they battle their way to the helm and hijack the vessel. Kyosji mans the helm while lightchest removes further threats on deck, and their ship makes it out of a tight not of pure chaos just before it gets really ugly. Then grappling hooks attach to the rail and Groany and Bubbles climb aboard. Groany asks, “I hope you don’t mind if we join you?”

Bubbles points. “There,” he says. “That’s the sneak attack coming from the north cliffs. I told you they had something else coming.” Groany shrugs, and says, “Head that way. We need to cripple their momentum before they reinforce Inciendas’s forces.” Kyosji Fisher says, “No problem. I’ll cut across their bows, and set this vessel on target for that ship. Then we each start boarding and killing!” “Sounds fun!” says Bubbles with a frightening smile.

The Chaos Claw, a Seabane needed to kill Millalobo

Meanwhile, Syraxx seemingly appears from nowhere and rapidly fires cannons on the rear element of the fleet, decimating its numbers and enraging the officers, laughing hysterically the entire time. Then Henna, cruising in his wake, thrusts past and engages the far portion of the rear, carving a hole in their back that can’t be ignored. Silent Assassin waits for them to draw the enemy’s attention further. Then, as soon as they maneuver to pursue Syraxx and Henna, Silent Assassin speeds out of the shadows of the east cliff and sinks several vessels, igniting the rest with Greek Fire.

A friendly vessel slips past them heading for the northeast cliff junction. Aboard it, the Pope says, “Take heed of the shoals, but draw us as near as thou mayest. We must mount the rocks with haste.”  Part of the rear is aflame, and Captain Muncher is busy extinguishing the fire. “I’m starving,” he says. Red Beard glances over, saying, “Hardly a time to worry about meals. Though I suppose there’s plenty of protein aboard, if yer not too picky about yer meat.”

Muncher looks down at a cooked human thigh and carves off a chunk with his knife. Then he downs it. The others look at him in expressions of shock, disgust, or amusement. “True, what dey say…taste kinda like pork.”

Golden Eye brings the vessel near the cliff, then it runs onto a sand bank. The pirates leave the boat and take to the crack in the cliff side, scaling by lantern and torch light. Archers from above make things difficult for them, and pick off some of the pirates, but the ones who make it to the top take them out.

The fighting continues as more pirates make their way to the fortress. It’s a fierce and bloody battle, and hours pass as casualties are accrued on both sides.

Finally, Golden Eye spots Inciendas as he hurls another fireball down on the ships below from atop a battlement. He says, “There’s the bastard. Let’s make him pay…and I don’t mean financially.”

The Coral Spear, weapon of the merman prince, the Pincoy

Red Beard bounds toward him and the warlock spins to face him, sending forth a lance of fire. The skullbearer barely dodges and lunges with his sword. Inciendas goes up in flames, and the metal of the sword blade melts. Red Beard screams and drops it, attacking with his axe, but Inciendas leaps from the wall into the courtyard. He sends out another fire lance which burns through the legs of several pirates, crippling them, while his men fight off the rest.

Red Beard positions himself to leap down onto Inciendas, but a Scottish Grappling Hook wraps around his legs, throwing him off balance.

Iron Beard steps forward and says, “’Bout time I paid you back for our last encounter,” and he double kicks Red Beard off the wall as the pirate swings his axe. Red Beard stumbles backward, wavers, and then plummets to the water below. Iron Beard turns away with an axe wound to his left arm, but steels himself as he drops to the courtyard below.

Inciendas stands with a wall of flame about him which burns up all arrows fired at him. Men and women who approach him fall to their knees, choking and gasping for breath. The warlock has stripped all oxygen from the courtyard save for where he stands. Iron Beard rushes the dark one, heedless of the flame, and hurls himself at him. Heat sears his flesh as he passes through the wall, but Inciendas is knocked to the ground.

Iron Beard stabs his sword through his hand and head butts the warlock, then inhales fresh air. Inciendas tries to fend him off, but is not strong enough in such close quarters, and finds his windpipe cut off. With his face only inches from the warlock, Iron Beard speaks: “I have come to exact vengeance for all the wrongs incurred upon my great-grandfather, Old Ironbeard. You will now tell me how to find and destroy the Mad Sea God, or I shall make you suffer as I intend him to!”

Millalobo, the Sea King and Mad Sea God

Inciendas quails and struggles to draw breath. He acquiesces. Inciendas rasps, “There is one of my order who can aid you…one who has always mistrusted the Sea King…Relampagas! You will find him in the Warlock Sanctum, in Guaitecas Archipelego, upon the Isle of the Star. He knows a way to destroy Millalobo…but it will do you no good! The Dark King of the Waters will smite you into dust and scatter you on the wind!”

Iron Beard looks pensive. He says, “We shall see. I will send you to meet you brother now.” And he slashes Inciendas’s throat with his blade.

Iron Beard stands up. “Looks like I’ve got to see a man about a god.”
